Hospital & Healthcare Buildings Fire Safety & Compliance
Golden Thread Fire Delay has been a longstanding provider of passive fire protection solutions to the healthcare sector for over 30 years. With extensive experience partnering the NHS, including Great Ormond Street Hospital and Guys’ and St Thomas’, our team has a clear understanding of the challenges our customers encounter.
Healthcare facilities have intricate layouts and include sensitive areas such as patient wards, operating theatres, corridors where continuous operation is crucial, as well as sites spanning multiple locations.
Guidance
Guidance for fire door inspections in Healthcare buildings can be found in Firecode HTM 05-03 part K, BS 9999 and BS 8214.
Golden Thread Fire Delay have sponsored 2 reference documents, RD1 Fire Door Inspections in Healthcare Buildings, and RD2 Fire Damper, Firestopping, and Cavity Barrier Inspections in Healthcare buildings. Both reference documents have been written by the National Association Fire Officers in Healthcare buildings (NAHFO) and are available here for FREE.
Each reference document can be used alongside HTM 05-03, BS 9999, AND BS 8214, as guidance when inspecting fire doors. Particularly when looking at factors that need to be considered, including criticality of the door/component in terms of location, frequency of use or the likelihood of impact damage.

Unique Challenges
A significant challenge in hospitals is the wear and tear endured by fire doors, largely from the shifting of beds, equipment, and other items. Over time, these factors can compromise the doors’ longevity, durability, infection control capabilities, and compliance. Common issues such as leaf gaps, thresholds, and damage to door leaves are typical in hospital settings and underscore the need for regular inspections and maintenance schedules.
Addressing the unique nature of passive fire protection within healthcare buildings requires a comprehensive approach that integrates specialised knowledge, tailored solutions, and adherence to stringent safety standards. By prioritising these factors, healthcare facilities can enhance their resilience to fire hazards while safeguarding the wellbeing of all occupants.
