Fire Door Installations

Fire doors are integral components of fire safety systems, crucial for protecting lives and property during fire emergencies. They play a vital role in containing fire and smoke, maintaining safe escape routes, delaying fire spread, enhancing building safety, and ensuring compliance with fire safety regulations.

There are two main types of fire door

fire resisting fire doors

Fire-resisting doors:
Typically found as internal doors or shutters, these, along with their frames and hardware, facilitate the movement of people and items within a fire compartment. When closed, their purpose is to restrict fire and smoke to a tested/guaranteed level of performance.

exteriror emergency escape doors

Non-fire-rated exterior emergency escape doors or shutters, commonly known as fire escape doors: These doors are not designed to resist fire; instead, their primary function is to open easily outward to allow individuals to reach an external place of safety during emergencies.

With their fire-resistant properties, self-closing mechanisms, and intumescent seals, fire doors perform crucial tasks during a fire emergency. By containing the fire at its source, they limit destruction, preserve valuable assets, and protect lives.

Fire Door Usage Risk Chart

Right door, right location

Not all fire doors offer the same level of protection, and some are crucial for maintaining overall fire safety in a building. Some buildings rely more heavily on fire doors to contain fires, safeguard individuals, and facilitate safe evacuation or shelter during emergencies. While cost is a significant factor in procuring fire doors, we prioritise other essential considerations, such as:

Fire rating
Aesthetics
Location
Expected usage

By thoroughly considering criticality and usage during design, selection, and installation, then it is more likely that doors appropriate to the occupancy and use will be specified, procured and suitably maintained. Our aim is to help clients to get all of these things right in order to reduce the door’s long term maintenance costs.

 sDoor Construction

Fire doors are typically constructed using a combination of materials designed to withstand fire and heat. The specific materials used can vary based on factors such as the required fire rating, building codes, and the door’s intended use.

With regards to timber door leaves, they usually consist of a door skin, which can be either painted or finished with a wood veneer. Beneath this surface layer lies a door core and blocking. The choice of core can have a significant impact on their performance and durability.

The main generic types of cores are:
• Timber framed flaxboard core
• Laminated timber core
• Graduated density core (GDC chipboard)

The specification and choice of core will be key to whether door leaves are suitable for medium to heavy duty usage and impact, or are only suitable for light duty use, such as being fitted to a riser cupboard and only being opened on an infrequent basis.

Making The Right Choice

The choice of fire doors is a crucial decision that can significantly affect the safety of buildings and their occupants. With a wide range of options available, such as aluminium, steel, and wrapped PVC, choosing the right door for your environment can be challenging. Each type has its own distinct advantages, here are just a few:

• Aluminium fire doors offer a perfect blend of safety, durability, and design flexibility. Known for its excellent thermal properties, aluminium is resistant to high temperatures, fully recyclable, and naturally resistant to corrosion. These doors are an ideal choice for a range of settings, including commercial, healthcare, and residential environments, as they require minimal maintenance.
• Steel fire doors are renowned for their exceptional fire resistance, durability and security. They are an excellent choice for buildings that demand high safety standards and performance. Their strength and adaptability ensure they can meet diverse functional and aesthetic requirements.
• PVC-Wrapped fire doors are highly resilient, durable, and easy to maintain, making them an excellent choice for high-traffic and high-wear environments, such as hospitals. Their hygienic properties and robust design ensure they stand up to demanding conditions.

When choosing internal fire doors, the inclusion of glazing can be a vital element, and ensuring the correct size and positioning of vision panels is fundamental for safety, compliance, light admittance, privacy and user comfort. Additionally, the type of glass and glazing methods used are key to ensuring fire integrity, acoustic performance, and overall safety.

Whichever type you select, it’s important to choose high-quality doors and ensure they are professionally installed to fully enjoy their benefits. At Golden Thread Fire Delay we are proud to be approved installers for leading fire door manufacturers, including SDS, Trovex, Metador, Sentry Doors and Humphrey & Strettons.

Ironmongery

The type of ironmongery is also an important issue as items such as fire rated hinges and door closers are available in a wide range of specification options and matching up the most suitable hardware for the door and its location is not always a straightforward process.
