Jul 30, 2024

In a recent interview with the FPA, Alan draw’s on insights from the Grenfell Tower fire, and highlights the need for proactive expertise in fire safety management.

In the article, Alan describes the establishment of a working group under the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers (NAHFO) to address the NHS’s lack of fire door inspection systems, resulting in the creation of the “Fire Door Inspections in Healthcare Buildings” reference document. This comprehensive guide, peer-reviewed, and endorsed by the National Fire Chiefs Council, covers inspection types, maintenance, and fire door management.

Emphasizing the need for ongoing education and compliance, Alan developed a CPD training module on fire safety awareness and practices in healthcare settings. The module not only provides guidance on how to inspect fire doors, but also basic awareness, covering issues such as the applicable legislation, how they are tested, and how the compatibility of their components is key.

Additionally, Alan introduces our latest reference document “Fire Damper, Firestopping & Cavity Barriers in Healthcare Buildings,” which offers guidance on inspecting these critical elements. Like the Fire Door Inspections reference document, it recommends and outlines Type 1 inspections for new installations, Type 2 inspections for existing installations, and Type 3 ongoing inspections for those that have previously been either Type 1 or Type 2 inspected.
