At Golden Thread Fire Delay, the importance of education and understanding in fire safety is central to what we do. Recognition of this came recently when at their conference in June, the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers’ (NAHFO) gave Alan Oliver an award for Research and Education in Healthcare Fire Safety Matters.
Alan has spent more than four decades in the passive fire protection industry, much of this time spent spreading the message through seminars and training modules of the need to achieve fire compliance in buildings. More recently, he has been working with NAFHO, writing two papers on the inspection of fire safety components in healthcare buildings. The first one on fire doors has evolved into a reference document for use across the sector. the second, focussed on Fire Dampers, Firestopping and Cavity Barriers, is due for publication later this year.

Said Alan, “First and foremost, I am of course pleased to receive the award and be recognised by my peers; however, my overriding thought is that writing papers, creating Reference Documents and organising seminars is the easy bit, and the job isn’t done until people understand and apply the knowledge.”
One of the key benefits of promoting learning, training, and up-skilling among clients, partners and other stakeholders is the exponential growth in awareness, and Alan looks forward to seeing the benefits spread across the healthcare sector and in other life safety critical buildings over the coming years.
